Step 1 – Guidance
You’ll begin with a Guidance and Planning Consultation with an Education Advisor. In this phone call, you’ll discuss your goals and availability, and be paired with a coach who fits your needs. This is an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about any step in your program and receive all of the necessary information you’ll need to move forward.
Then you’ll have your first Coaching Session with your instructor. Here, you’ll read some scripts you chose and prepared in the genre of your choice so your coach can assess your vocal strengths. Ultimately you and your coach will pinpoint the best ways to move forward and make the most of your sessions leading up to your demo.
Step 2 – Private coaching & Foundational classes
Timeline: your private coaching sessions and foundational classes can be taken in your time-frame, and in any sequence; even simultaneously.
Minimum 5 Private Coaching Sessions per demo you record; via Zoom or in-person at Edge New York City.
To make sure that you are ready to record and that you put your best foot forward when it comes time to create your demo, we always require a minimum of 5 coaching sessions per demo, and your coach will always let you know whether they feel you will need additional training at the end of those 5 sessions. These sessions are used to hone your VO technique and source demo scripts that are appropriate for your chosen genre and voice.
Oddly, private sessions via Zoom are generally better, since they simulate typical recording sessions (in which voice actors record paid-projects from their home, and are directed by remote clients).
Choose a program of 5, 10 or 15 coaching sessions.
- 1 demo program = 5 sessions
- 2 demo program = 10 sessions
- 3 demo program = 15 sessions
8 Interactive Foundational Classes; via Zoom.
Each class has Q&A time, and is taught by an instructor who works professionally in the industry and specializes in the class content. This helps you learn from their experience before launching your own voiceover career. These classes can be taken at any time throughout your program, with the exception of What Now? which is to be completed when you’re finished.
These group classes include:
- Technique 101
- Home Studio 101
- Auditions 101
- Don’t Embarrass Yourself
- Marketing 101
- Vocal Health
- Business & Money 101
- What Now?
And to supplement, you can utilize our Free Online Training Resources.
These include our Script Library, Voiceover Script Reading Contest, Feedback Forum, Blog Articles, and more – all to further prepare and assist you in working professionally in this field.
Step 3 – Demo Recording & Home Studio Checkup
The creation of your demos is the next big step in your overall voiceover journey. Once you and your coach have determined that you will be able to record a professional-quality demo, you can begin this very fun step!
Each demo has 5 steps:
Step 1 = Demo Script ‘Preparation & Rehearsal’ Session: This is an additional hour-long session to work on your scripts with your coach. Think of this time as a dress rehearsal. You will review and practice the scripts that have been set aside for your demo. You and your coach can make any last minute changes and do some more training on them.
Step 2 = Demo Recording Session: A week or more later, it’s time to record! We schedule 90-minutes for this session. Even though it’s only a minute or two of content, we want lots of extra time for voice-direction, nerves (if you have them), and whatever comes along. We never want to rush this session. Your coach will direct you during your recording session, and always record multiple takes of each script.
You can select where you record your demo(s):
- You’re welcome to record in-person at our New York City studios or at our partner studios in Washington DC and Los Angeles. Recording in these locations is included in the cost of the program.
- Or you can record at an approved alternate studio anywhere in the world and your coach will direct you via Zoom, Source Connect, or ipDTL. We can help you find a quality studio. You will be responsible for covering the rental cost.
- Or you can record at your own home studio. In this case, we will first provide a free ‘Home Studio Checkup‘ to ensure your sound quality is professional quality. If it’s not, we’ll make some recommendations. After all, you’ll use your studio to record your professional voiceover work.
Step 3 = Demo Mix: After recording, our team of world-class engineers and even David Goldberg himself will work on your demo behind the scenes, editing, processing, sequencing, mixing, and mastering your demo – creating a professional voiceover demo that’s industry standard and broadcast quality.
Step 4 = Demo Mix Revisions: Your demo will then be emailed to you for your review, and you and our Education Team will discuss any comments you may have. There are never additional fees for one round of reasonable revisions. We want you to feel comfortable and happy with your demo.
Step 5 = Demo Mastering: This final step is like icing on the cake; not everyone does it (probably because they don’t know how, or because they don’t want to spend so much extra time) – but we always do this. People know our work in the industry, so we want you – and us – to sound good.
Step 4 – Launch!
